hi kids - show coming up October 27 at 7:30 at Sidewalk...yeah, i know, it's about time. will have a bunch of new numbers. also, big news, i have a song in an upcoming film, a documentary called AKA Tommy Chong, directed by Josh Gilbert. i did a cover of the Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens) song, "Trouble," recorded with guitarist Oz Noy. i'm a particularly enormous fan of Cat, so it meant a whole lot to me to sing one of his songs.

anyhow, back to the film...i went up to see it at the Toronto Film Festival (the premiere after-party featured pot brownies but don't tell my mom), where it got rave reviews. to quote Roger Ebert,

"Josh Gilbert’s “a.k.a. Tommy Chong” is a documentary about the entrapment and prosecution of comedian Tommy Chong on charges of selling bong pipes through the mail. You do not have to approve of drugs to be offended by the way the Justice Department under John Ashcroft created a fictitious head shop in Pennsylvania for the specific purpose of ordering paraphernalia from the Chong family’s web-based retail story, in order to nail him with that state’s laws against such merchandise.
....Of all the defendants of this particular government sting, Chong was the only one with no prior convictions who actually served time. Yes, Chong broke the law. But the paraphernalia law went unenforced and ignored for years until the Ashcroft minions dusted it off and aimed its cross-hairs straight at Tommy Chong."

i am brokenhearted. i just found out Elliott Smith has killed himself. how is this possible? i'm confused by sadness. here i've been waiting for his next record, waiting to see him on tour again, waiting for the day i'd meet him...i'll be waiting forever.

i saw him at Irving Plaza and i saw him at the Beacon. the Beacon was like 3 years ago, around Halloween. he was smoking and drinking his way through the set and his voice was a mess and the audience was dead quiet listening to him. it was one of the best shows i've ever seen.

it's impossible to figure how many people Elliott Smith influenced and how many musicians he inspired. he was never afraid of the dark in a song, and whether his lyrics were confessional or not, they still hit you personally, genuinely, and made you feel like you knew the person singing them. as for me, i wrote my best songs during the months when i first discovered either/or. i played that record nonstop, like it was voodoo. i wouldn't have written a lot of my songs if either/or didn't exist.

i am taken by surprise, feeling grief for someone i never met. i'm never gonna know you now but i'm gonna love you anyhow.

my sincere condolences to Elliott's family and friends.

hi kids,

new pics up! go on and check out the gallery to see some scenes from Teddy Richard's show last week at Sidewalk. he was awesome! plus added bonus, i stayed out so late that i felt positively teenagerish. thanks to everyone who came out, and special thanks to Teddy who let me sing a few tunes. Boohoo for those of you who missed the show - go see what you missed at www.teddyrichards.com

let's see...what else is shaking... in between praying that Dean beats the crap out of all those other presidential hopefuls, i've been busy in the recording studio working on a new cd. i also found out that an ancient Pets tune, Evol, was nominated as Track of the Day at garageband.com. cool!

mark your calendars, show coming up Oct. 18...

please forgive my shameless advertising and promotion, but is anyone interested in a PA system? then head on over to my ebay auction. i won 2 speakers and a mixer recently in a song contest and just don't have a need for them.

thanks! shameless promotion over....for now.

so for the past 2 days i was hanging out at my friend Liane's office (which is where i go sometimes to fund my vacations) and this guy named Aaron had an ipod set to play at random, and i think i listened to maybe 1000 songs, covering over 20 genres, that i'd never heard before...and right now i feel sooo tired, like when you eat a too big meal, drink one too many margaritas, and then read the endings to a dozen scifi novels at the same time.

bottom line: it is unsettling to listen to so much music. i am now afraid of ipods.

other than that....some nice recent news...Faithless is in the Alternative Top Ten at garageband.com and will be track of the day on May 10th. also got a gig way the hell in the future, June 21 at Sidewalk. mark your calendars babies...

New EP Available!

Just Plain Folks Songwriting Contest

Gig December 15

Interview with The Women of MP3.com

Brand New Fan Site & Message Board

hi roadsters,

sorry i've been so quiet these past few months. what with the escape to paradise over the summer, then the complete shock of new york city, i've definitely been exhibiting under-the-cover symptoms.

hope everyone is doing well...i've got some cool news...a brand new live acoustic cd - 5 songs on the cheap available at mp3.com. did an interview with The Women of Mp3.com too, which was neat.

and VERY excited about the Just Plain Folks Songwriting Contest. Star came in second place and my record came in fourth in the singer-songwriter category (yeah, i know, so close!). 5 songs also placed in the top 500 in the Billboard Songwriting Contest. what does that mean exactly? well, they sent me 5 pairs of the weirdest looking sunglasses as a consolation prize. i haven't quite figured out what to do with them yet.

what else... have 2 fansites now: www.karenires.net and karen_ires.tripod.com. there's some different stuff on them, reviews of live shows and the like. Lauren over at karenires.net also made me a new messageboard! pretty sweet that.

finally...biggest fun news. got a gig on december 15 10PM at the C-NOTE here in NYC. Eugene will be playing elec guitar, Jon on bass, and there will even be a surprise musical guest... this is not a show to miss, my friend KJ will even be there selling her amazing IluvFDNY T-shirts (all funds going to ladder 3 in the east village). also, the band Loaded Dreams goes on before me at 9PM - i highly recommend coming early to see them.

hope to see you all at the show! if not, internet love coming at ya...

And...drumroll...the Digital Heroin compilation cd is finally out and about! Pick up a copy and listen to some great bands.

One more thing, if you haven’t already checked out Mark Kirby’s MusicDish review about yours truly, well, I highly recommend it!

Road Trip to Boston!

Hi Kids,

Wow, I haven't been to Boston since I was 18 and ran away to music school for a semester (much to my parent's horror!) But it looks like I'll be there next week for the Boston Nemo Festival - yay! For those of you in the near environs, I'll be playing on April 21 at 2:30 pm at the World Trade Center. Unlike a lot of the conference's showcases, this is a FREE event and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC so come on down.

Also, just started a new post-gig info section on my dates page. This was inspired by Joy and Julie slogging it from Alabama to NYC to see my last show (how sweet are they?) They even took a bunch of pics and posted them - thanks girls! Anyway, I set up this new section and now I'm gonna have to fill it so watch out - if you're not careful you too might show up on my web site.

Some more nice things: I'll be featured on Shauna Skye's Moon Radio on Sunday,
April 15. Check out Shauna’s web site
as well - she’s a fabulous musician. I'll also be hitting the air waves in Brazil, thanks to Rodrigo Parra - cool! And congratulations to the winner of the Digital Heroin Karen Ires cd give-a-way. Even better news - the contest continues with more cd freebies from some amazing artists on the station.

Thanks so much everyone for stopping by. And many many thanks to those of you who continue to vote for me as a farmclub.com recommended artist.

I appreciate all your support, babies.

xo, karen

WIN A FREE CD!!!

3/24/01

hi darlings,

Guess what? Follow this link to Digital Heroin and you may win one of my cds! The drawing is on April 6 so don't wait too long kids!

And I just received fabulous news from farmclub.com. Their A&R team chose the song Hotel Room for their recommended list. Cool! Uh, so now I have a little favor to ask of you...if you've got the time please go to my page there and vote for the song. No downloading required and believe me, your vote counts! Click here and maybe those A&R reps will take further notice!

About shows -next one around the bend is on Thursday, April 29 at 10PM at Sidewalk. This promises to be a wild night so get those suits pressed and haul out the silk stockings okay?

Thanks again everyone for all your support, emails and love. It's truly appreciated!

hiya kids,

This just in...the song Star has been chosen to be on the exclusive NEMO compilation CD (as part of the NEMO Music Conference I'll be playing in April). They told me that they received entries from 1300 artists so as you can imagine I'm drinking a beer (or two or three) right now and toasting myself!

Also, Ciara from message board fame happened to catch the song Hotel Room on the MTV show Undressed. Sure enough, I checked out the MTV site and discovered the tune played on episode 422. Bummer, though, cause I guess I missed my debut, though I'm hoping there was some kickin' underwear involved. If anyone else caught the show, please drop me a line!

As for gigs, got 2 of em set up for March. They're both at Sidewalk (6th St. & Ave. A, NYC) and the first one on the plate is this Sunday, March 11 at 9PM. Would love to see everyone so get your shoes all shined up and come on down babies!

hey treasures,

Thanks so much to all of you who came down to the Sidewalk show on the 10th! Extra special thanks to Nick, dj at 88.7 WNHU, for making a hike into the city with his pals. Apparantly Nick's been playing the cd on the air too on his Monday show (he played the entire cd this week!) so make sure you call in and say how much you love him - and me! (tel. 203.934.9296)

Also, wonder of wonders, I seem to have a message board! While I was lazing around, procrastinating my life, laundry, and site updates, Joy & Julie out in Alabama went and created one for me. And not only that, they managed to get me some radio play on WVUA! Thanks so much girls!

Finally, uploaded another song on mp3.com called evol - you old timers probably remember the tune from when the band was called PETS. It's definitely still one of my faves, and currently only available on mp3.com (but you can download it for free!)

In the middle of booking some more shows. For you guys out in Boston, though, I'll be playing at the NEMO showcase on April 21 at 2:30 at the World Trade Center. This is a FREE event, and open to the public.

Still finding the learning curve on html...but I've managed to add a couple of new things to this site, including a links area and guestbook (oh sweethearts, don't be afraid, sign it now!)

Hey kids!

Thank you all so so so much for your support and emails (special thanks to you cd buyers!). I can't tell you how much I appreciate it and am inspired by it. Big love to all of you.

Some good stuff going on. Recently recorded the basics on 6 news tracks at Temple of Soul in NYC with Christopher Covert, Daniel Wyatt and Charles Stella. Very fun and very cool studio. Thanks guys!

In the mp3.com universe...Hotel Room is currently floating around the top 10 on the indie-alt charts. yay! And the song Evrylsthwy was recently added to the station Digital Heroin which has some great tracks on it. Highly listenable and a great place to find up and coming artists. Very recommended.

Also, for you old timers, you might have noticed that I've redesigned my site...but I'm still hacking away at the web stuff. Come back often for new and neat things - guest lists, radio play updates and super links. Since I really don't know what I'm doing, though, please email me if you have any trouble navigating the site.

Don't forget - got a show coming up at Sidewalk on February 10 in NYC so come on down. It's FREE too (okay, well, the mc does pass around a tip jar after the gig, but it's still the cheapest show in town). Please come visit and make sure to introduce yourself.

Nuff said. Shout out to Joy and Julie in Alabama for all their help with the radio plays. And to Alek Vila at Digital Heroin.

xo, karen
